Martin Lewis: This is the best time to book cheap Christmas trains and save money | Travel News | Travel

Train tickets for Christmas and New Year are best booked now if rail passengers want to travel cheaply, Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis, 46, explained on Good Morning Britain today.

Martin said those travelling around the festive season should be on the hunt for cheap tickets at this time of year rather than waiting.

If you know when and where you want to travel you can bag the cheapest fares by being the early bird.

“Rail firms usually confirm timetables and start selling advance tickets around eight to 12 weeks before the travel date,” Martin told the ITV show.

To get the cheapest train tickets it’s worth booking as soon as possible within that time in order to ensure availability.

Some rail companies, including Greater Anglia, CrossCountry and East Midlands Trains, are already selling super-cheap Christmas fares.

Others will launch their low-cost tickets in the near future so it’s best to check now if you know when you will be travelling.

Martin said: “It’s worth doing, for example, an off-peak journey from London to Leeds return, departing on 22 December and coming back on 28 December.

“It’s currently selling for £39 (on the day this can be £110),” proving that advance purchase is best.”

If the rail firm you’re looking to travel with hasn’t released its Christmas seats yet, there’s still a way to keep an eye out for cheap tickets.

Martin advises making the most of train companies’ tech offerings to alert you to ticket sales.

Trainline offers a free email alert through its ticket alert system to let passengers know when tickets are available.

National Rail has a future travel chart. This shows “the furthest date in the future you can buy advance tickets for each train firm,” explained Martin.

The best time to book flights for Christmas has also been revealed thanks to new research.

By booking 13 weeks in advance, travellers can save up to 29 per cent, a study by travel fare aggregator Skyscanner has shown

Skyscanner’s research also proved it’s a common myth that travelling on Christmas Day is cheaper.

Prices on Christmas Day are 24 per cent higher than the average flight price for flights from the UK to all destinations between 16 – 31 December 2017.

However, flying out just a day before could make all the difference.

The cheapest day to travel in the lead up to Christmas is Christmas Eve, saving 19 per cent compared to Christmas Day.

With this in mind we wanted to make sure travellers were armed with the latest Christmas flight data to make the best decisions, e.g. travelling on Christmas Day has long been believed to be the cheapest day over the festive period,” said Lisa Tyndall, Senior Growth Manager from Skyscanner.

“However, our data is showing the reverse to be true and it is, in fact, the most expensive day.”
